A twin-seater Indian Air Force (IAF) Mirage 2000 aircraft crashed in Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh, during a routine training sortie on Thursday.
Fortunately, both pilots ejected safely and were immediately taken to a nearby hospital for a medical checkup.
Taking to X, the IAF posted, “A Mirage 2000 aircraft of the IAF crashed near Shivpuri (Gwalior), during a routine training sortie today, after encountering a system malfunction. Both the pilots ejected safely. An enquiry has been ordered by the IAF, to ascertain the cause of the accident.”
The crash occurred near Karaira village, approximately 120 km from Gwalior, home to the IAF training center.
According to local police, the incident was triggered by a malfunction in the aircraft.
After identifying the malfunction, the pilots deployed their parachutes and ejected. However, one of the pilots sustained injuries during the jump.
Videos from the scene showed the plane’s debris scattered across a field, with a large crowd of villagers gathering at the site after hearing the loud sound of the crash.
The local administration quickly arrived to secure the area.
A police official confirmed, “A team was dispatched to the spot soon after receiving information. Both the pilots ejected safely, and no casualties were reported.”
The Mirage 2000, a multirole fighter jet manufactured by France’s Dassault Aviation, was first flown in 1978 and inducted into the French Air Force in 1984. Of the 600 Mirage 2000 units produced, half were exported to countries including India.
