Madhavpur Mela Reflects Spirit Of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday extended his best wishes for the ongoing Madhavpur Mela in Porbandar, describing it as a vibrant celebration of India’s cultural diversity and unity.

He noted that the festival reflects the enduring spirit of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’ by bringing together traditions from different regions.

The Madhavpur Mela, which began on March 27, commemorates the legendary marriage of Lord Krishna and Goddess Rukmini and continues over five days.

In a post on social media platform X, the Prime Minister highlighted how the festival strengthens the cultural bond between Gujarat and the Northeastern states.

Sharing a video from his earlier address in the Mann Ki Baat programme (April 2022), he recalled the historical and cultural importance of the fair.

He explained that the event takes place in the coastal village of Madhavpur and symbolically represents the union between western and northeastern India through the sacred legend of Krishna and Rukmini’s marriage.

The Prime Minister also noted that this unique connection between the East and the West forms a vital part of India’s heritage.

Over the years, the festival has evolved, with increasing participation from communities in the Northeast, including artisans and performers who contribute to its vibrancy.

He added that, in keeping with tradition, members of the bride’s side—referred to as ‘Gharati’—from Northeastern states are now actively involved in the celebrations.

Artists and craftsmen from across the region showcase their work, enriching the cultural experience of the fair.

Describing the Madhavpur Mela as a confluence of India’s eastern and western traditions, Prime Minister Modi said it stands as a powerful testament to the idea of unity in diversity, reinforcing the vision of a culturally connected nation.
