LPG Subsidy Rules Tighten As Aadhaar Biometric Verification Becomes Mandatory

Domestic LPG consumers will have to complete Biometric Aadhaar Authentication (BAA) from October 1, 2026, if they want to book refills at the regulated price while continuing to receive government subsidy.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said the measure will help direct subsidised LPG towards eligible households and limit the diversion of domestic cylinders for commercial or industrial purposes.

The government expects Aadhaar-based authentication to help identify duplicate and ineligible connections and improve the distribution of subsidy benefits.

Consumers who have already completed biometric authentication will not have to repeat the process and can book their refills as usual.

Customers who have not yet completed BAA can use various channels to finish the verification process.

Delivery personnel can carry out the authentication through mobile applications while delivering LPG cylinders, and consumers can also visit LPG distributor showrooms.

Oil marketing companies have also made their own digital applications available for the process.

Indane customers can use IndianOil ONE, Bharatgas consumers can use HelloBPCL, and HP Gas customers can complete authentication through HP PAY.

Subsidy Not Available Without Authentication

Consumers who decide against completing BAA will continue to receive LPG cylinders, but they will have to purchase them at the applicable market price without the subsidy.

Such customers can register their preference through their oil marketing company’s websites, mobile applications, WhatsApp chatbots, IVRS facilities and other available digital channels.

They will be able to receive 5-kg or 10-kg cylinders, depending on local availability.

Government data showed that 27.43 crore active domestic LPG consumers had completed biometric Aadhaar authentication by September 19, covering almost 90 per cent of the consumer base.

The government said accurate beneficiary identification will help ensure that subsidy support reaches genuine consumers.

It added that the implicit subsidy on a 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder stood at around Rs 210 in September 2026.
