Congress MP and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi visited the Valmiki Temple in Delhi on Tuesday. The visit was part of his outreach ahead of the February 5 Assembly elections. Gandhi, accompanied by Congress candidate Sandeep Dikshit, offered prayers at the temple and met with residents in the Dalit colony. Locals welcomed him and presented him with a turban.
Sandeep Dikshit is contesting from the New Delhi constituency. He faces a tough challenge from AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal and BJP candidate Parvesh Verma.
After visiting the temple, Gandhi interacted with Dalit residents in the New Delhi constituency. He discussed their concerns, especially about unemployment and housing. Later, he visited Gole Market to meet more locals.
Sandeep Dikshit said unemployment is the biggest issue in the area. He criticised AAP and BJP for neglecting NDMC employees.
“Earlier, NDMC employed 7,800 people. Now, many jobs are gone. Compensatory jobs for families have also stopped. Kejriwal, despite being part of NDMC, never addressed this. The BJP, under the Union Home Ministry, also failed. Rahul Gandhi assured us he will raise these issues in Parliament,” Dikshit said.
Residents expressed their frustrations. Sunita, a local, said, “We need proper housing and jobs for our children. Rahul Gandhi promised to help us. We are hopeful.” Another resident, Suman, added, “He assured us our demands will be fulfilled once Congress wins the elections.”
Gandhi will address rallies in Patparganj and Okhla later in the day. Congress has ramped up its campaign ahead of the polls.
The Delhi elections are scheduled for February 5, with results on February 8. Congress faces a three-way fight with AAP and BJP.
Congress has promised several welfare schemes, including LPG cylinders for Rs 500, free electricity up to 300 units, and Rs 2,500 monthly aid for women under the ‘Pyari Didi Yojana.’
AAP is seeking a third term and has promised free healthcare for senior citizens, financial aid for temple priests, and other welfare measures.
BJP has pledged 300 free electricity units, free bus rides for students and senior citizens, and monthly financial aid for women.
