Lieutenant Governor Dr Dinesh Sharma Reviews Development Projects During Two-Day Visit To Swaraj Dweep

Lieutenant Governor Dr Dinesh Sharma began a two-day visit to Swaraj Dweep, focusing on infrastructure development, public services, tourism and local grievances.

He received a guard of honour and a traditional welcome upon arriving at the island’s helipad.

During a review meeting with public representatives and officials, he assessed development projects, waste management, law and order, and pending public complaints.

He directed officials to prioritise essential works and ensure time-bound resolution of grievances.

At the Primary Health Centre in Govind Nagar, the Lieutenant Governor interacted with patients and reviewed medical facilities.

He directed officials to pursue its upgrade to a Community Health Centre, install an automatic analyser for 40 types of tests, repair the X-ray machine and operationalise the long-pending generator.

He also called for specialist recruitment, an operation theatre and 10 additional rooms for healthcare personnel.

At Government Senior Secondary School, Govind Nagar, he directed the construction of four rooms, repairs to teachers’ accommodation and the establishment of an Anganwadi centre.

He also sought action on a badminton court, a school van and the introduction of Commerce.

Tourism and Transport Infrastructure Boost

The Lieutenant Governor inspected the seaport terminal and inaugurated three air-conditioned hop-on hop-off buses alongside the Member of Parliament. The service will allow tourists to explore island attractions throughout the day for a single fare.

He also called for adequate parking facilities and efforts to secure Central Government approval for a proposed new jetty.

Dr Sharma laid the foundation stone for a two-lakh-litre overhead water tank serving Krishna Nagar, Shyam Nagar and Vijay Nagar.

During a ‘Jan Samvad’ programme in Shyam Nagar, residents raised concerns about a cremation ground, water sports operators at Elephant Beach and road repairs.

The Lieutenant Governor announced ₹19 crore for roads towards Kalapathar and Radhanagar, the operation of a two-megawatt power plant and ₹40 lakh to upgrade the Govind Nagar fish market.

On the first day, he laid the foundation stone for three additional classrooms at Government Secondary School in Krishna Nagar.

He also inspected Radhanagar Beach, the Andaman Islands’ only Blue Flag-certified beach, and directed officials to improve parking, public amenities and tourist safety.

Senior officials, public representatives and village head Ajit Kumar Rai attended the visit.
