‘Let Parliament Function’: Amit Shah Challenges Opposition; Offers Debate On Student Protest

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has challenged the Opposition to allow Parliament to operate while assuring members that he is ready to respond to their concerns over the police action against protesting students.

The Opposition has been pressing for Shah to appear in the House and explain the police response to the July 20 march concerning the NEET paper leak.

The dispute has repeatedly interrupted proceedings during the ongoing Monsoon Session.

Speaking to journalists outside Parliament, Shah dismissed allegations that he had stayed away from the House and said he had attended Parliament regularly since the session opened.

Shah said the government had already agreed to the Opposition’s request for a debate on the student protests. He pointed out that Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju had also made clear that the government was willing to participate in a comprehensive discussion.

The Home Minister reiterated that he would personally answer questions raised by MPs and address the concerns surrounding the incident. He accused the Opposition of preventing the debate despite the government accepting its initial demand.

Proposed Debate

Shah proposed that the Opposition send its request to the Speaker by 2 PM, after which the government could begin the debate at 3 PM on Wednesday. He said the discussion could continue until 3 PM on Thursday, giving MPs sufficient time to raise their concerns.

Shah assured the House that he would remain present, listen to the arguments from members and provide responses to the issues raised. He also maintained that the government had no reason to conceal information regarding the matter.

Shah argued that the student protests and the subsequent police action required a comprehensive parliamentary examination rather than a brief statement.

The Home Minister said the NDA government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi was prepared to debate the issue, but Parliament needed to function normally for such a discussion to take place.

The political deadlock continues to disrupt proceedings in both Houses during the Monsoon Session.
