Kota Mahant Murder: Protest Withdrawn Following Administration’s Assurance

The protest by saints and family members over the murder of Chandresal Math Mahant Devanand Maharaj ended on Saturday after the administration assured action on their key demands.

The demonstration had continued outside the mortuary of MBS Hospital in Kota, where saints, devotees and relatives sought a fair investigation and commemorative measures in honour of the slain Mahant.

After several discussions, officials, however, assured the protesters that they would consider their demands as per established procedures.

After receiving the assurance, the family accepted the Mahant’s body and left for his native village to perform the final rites.

Kota City Superintendent of Police Tejaswini Gautam said investigators were making rapid progress in the case. She said police had detained five to six people for questioning and expected to solve the case soon.

Additional District Magistrate Vinod Kumar Malhotra said saints and family members submitted three major demands to the administration.

• The first demand sought a fair and impartial investigation through a Special Investigation Team (SIT) or under the direct supervision of senior police officers.
• The second requested that a college in Kota be named after Mahant Devanand Maharaj in recognition of his contributions.
• The third called for the construction of a memorial canopy in his honour.

Officials assured the protesters that the administration would forward the proposals to the appropriate authorities for consideration.

After the protest ended, saints, devotees and family members paid their final respects to Mahant Devanand Maharaj. They then took his body for cremation.

Despite the withdrawal of the protest, anger and grief remain widespread among the saint community and local residents.

Several religious leaders have demanded a thorough investigation and the swift arrest of all individuals involved.

Someone allegedly murdered Mahant Devanand Maharaj late on Friday night inside Chandresal Math in Kota’s Borkheda area.

The incident has, however, triggered widespread outrage across the Hadoti region and raised concerns regarding security at religious institutions.
