Arvind Kejriwal, AAP National Convenor and former Delhi Chief Minister, accused the BJP and Election Commission of India (ECI) of conspiring to delete voter names. He claimed the deletions specifically targeted AAP supporters ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections. Speaking at a press conference, Kejriwal labeled the move a direct attack on democracy.
“We have proof that the BJP gave lists to the ECI to delete voters’ names,” he said. Kejriwal claimed Booth Level Officers (BLOs) confirmed this. Furthermore, he alleged over 11,000 voter names were removed in the Shahdara constituency alone.
Residents of Shahdara’s Ambedkar Camp attended the press meet. They claimed their names were illegally deleted from voter rolls. Moreover, Kejriwal accused BJP workers of visiting slum areas to ask voters about their preferred party. “If they say AAP, their names get removed,” he alleged.
Kejriwal highlighted additional voter deletions in other constituencies. Janakpuri lost 6,247 names, Sangam Vihar 5,862, and R.K. Puram 4,285. Meanwhile, he criticized the ECI for failing to upload details of the deletions, calling it a failure of transparency.
Kejriwal warned BLOs and Assistant Returning Officers (AROs) to avoid involvement in illegal activities. He promised legal action against officials complicit in the deletions. “Governments change, but records remain. Officials will face punishment,” he said.
In addition, AAP leaders accused the BJP of fearing defeat in the upcoming elections. Raghav Chadha alleged the BJP seeks to delete voter names exceeding AAP’s previous victory margins. Similarly, Manish Sisodia called the deletions a return to colonial-era tactics.
Delhi is set to elect its 70-member Assembly in January-February. Therefore, Kejriwal demanded the ECI restore voter names and ensure free and fair elections.
