Kedarnath Shrine Reopens As PM Urges Responsible Pilgrimage And Local Support

The reopening of Kedarnath Dham on Wednesday marked the beginning of a significant phase of the annual Char Dham pilgrimage, drawing large crowds of devotees eager to offer prayers at one of Hinduism’s most sacred sites.

The ceremony was held with traditional rituals, Vedic hymns, and chants of ‘Har Har Mahadev’, creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere as pilgrims gathered in large numbers to witness the occasion.

In a message to the public, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the importance of maintaining cleanliness, respecting environmental concerns, and supporting local communities throughout the yatra. He also encouraged pilgrims to favour locally made goods under the ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative.

The Prime Minister noted that the Char Dham Yatra had already commenced earlier with the opening of Gangotri Dham and Yamunotri Dham on April 19, with Badrinath Dham scheduled to open on April 23, completing the four revered sites of the pilgrimage circuit.

Describing the yatra as a reflection of India’s enduring spiritual heritage, PM Modi said it continues to unite people from diverse backgrounds, languages, and traditions, reinforcing the idea of national unity. He also referred to historical figures such as Adi Shankaracharya, whose journeys helped shape the cultural and spiritual significance of these shrines.

The Prime Minister said that undertaking the Char Dham Yatra carries immense spiritual value. He often equated it with visiting numerous sacred sites over many years.

Addressing development in the region, PM Modi noted that Uttarakhand has made steady progress in infrastructure, tourism, and economic growth. This is especially notable following past natural disasters that once disrupted the region.

Improved roads, healthcare access, and communication networks have made the pilgrimage safer and more accessible.

At the same time, Prime Minister Modi stressed the need to protect the fragile Himalayan environment. He urged pilgrims to avoid single-use plastics and keep rivers clean.

PM Modi also asked them to use public transport instead of private vehicles to reduce environmental strain.

PM Modi further encouraged travellers to adopt responsible practices. These include adherence to rules, cooperation with authorities, and mindful conduct during the journey.

Environmental conservation efforts and voluntary service along pilgrimage routes also formed an integral part of the experience. These initiatives played a key role in shaping it.

Calling the yatra more than a religious visit, the Prime Minister said it offers an opportunity to promote service, harmony, and collective responsibility. He also emphasised the importance of supporting local artisans and businesses to strengthen regional livelihoods.

PM Modi reflected on his recent visit to Kedarnath and Badrinath. He described the experience as deeply moving.

The Prime Minister expressed confidence that pilgrims would find similar spiritual fulfilment during their journey.

The Char Dham Yatra is one of India’s most significant religious undertakings. It continues to attract thousands each year. Pilgrims travel to the sacred landscapes of Uttarakhand.
