A major road accident near the Kalyan area of Mumbai on Monday left at least nine people dead and two others critically injured after a car collided with a heavy vehicle.
The crash occurred around 11 AM on the Kalyan–Murbad road near Rayta Bridge, where a car travelling towards Murbad reportedly crashed head-on into a dumper truck. Officials said the impact was severe, leading to multiple fatalities at the scene.
According to police, a total of 12 people were inside the car. Eight victims died on the spot, while another succumbed to injuries at a hospital. The injured were rushed for medical treatment and remain in critical condition.
Teams from the Titwala Police Station reached the location soon after receiving information and began rescue operations. Local residents also assisted in pulling out victims from the wreckage and transporting them to nearby medical facilities.
DS Swami confirmed the death toll and said investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the collision.
Initial findings suggest that overspeeding or loss of control may have contributed to the accident.
The incident also led to heavy traffic congestion along the stretch near Rayta Bridge, affecting movement on the busy route for several hours.
Authorities have sent the bodies for post-mortem examinations and are continuing their probe into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
