Justice Devendra Upadhyaya to be appointed as Justice Devendra Upadhyaya
Justice Devendra Upadhyaya of the Allahabad High Court has been recommended as the Chief Justice of Bombay High Court. The Supreme Court Collegium comprised Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, and Justice Sanjiv Khanna made the recommendation. The collegiums metioned that Justice Upadhyaya has worked with great dedication for a prolonged period of 11 years. He has delivered justice in his entire tenure in which he served as the judge.
Justice Devendra’s appointment will represent the Allahabad HC among the Chief Justices of India. The Collegium said, “He has been functioning there since his elevation and has acquired experience of more than 11 years in dispensing justice in the largest High Court in the country. On appointment of Mr Justice Upadhyaya, the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad which is the largest High Court with a total judge strength of 160 would get adequate representation among the Chief Justices of High Courts…the Collegium is of the considered view that Mr Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya is fit and suitable in all respects for being appointed as Chief Justice of the High Court of Bombay”.

The former Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court’s retirement was suggested on May 30, 2023. As Justice RD Dhanuka declared a vacancy. The acting Chief Justice of the Court at the moment is Justice Nitin Jamdar.
On November 21, 2011, Justice Upadhyaya received an elevation to the Allahabad HC. He is now the third-most senior judge there.
According to paragraph 3 of the Memorandum of Procedure for Appointment of Chief Justice of a High Court, which states that appointments are made based on seniority subject to merit and honesty, with equitable representation given to various High Courts, the appointment was made as stated above.
