JPSC-JSSC Row: Jharkhand Students Ask Rahul Gandhi To Witness Protest In Ranchi

The students’ agitation in Jharkhand entered its 19th consecutive day on Tuesday. Protesters are opposing alleged irregularities in JPSC and JSSC recruitment examinations.

After Monday’s police action during an Assembly march, students regrouped late at night at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium. They resumed their sit-in and urged the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, to visit Ranchi.

Ravindra Paswan of the JPSC-JSSC Reform Forum said Rahul Gandhi should witness the students’ situation personally. He stressed that the movement seeks transparency in recruitment and an impartial investigation. He added that it is not aimed at any political party.

Protester Rohit Kumar Singh also appealed to Rahul Gandhi to meet the students.

Showing injury marks on his back, Rohit Kumar Singh alleged that police beat protesters after the lights near the Assembly were switched off. He further alleged that male personnel baton-charged women protesters.

The protesters recalled Rahul Gandhi’s criticism of the police action and his support for peaceful demonstrations. They said he should now hear their grievances directly.

Thousands of students marched from Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium towards the Assembly on Monday. They crossed several barricades before the police stopped them. Security personnel used water cannons, tear gas and baton charges to disperse the crowd.

Protesters claimed that more than 100 students suffered injuries or minor wounds.

The agitation primarily seeks cancellation of the JSSC-CGL examination and a CBI investigation into alleged recruitment irregularities.

The BJP called a statewide bandh on Tuesday against the police action. The bandh received a mixed response.

The state government said several student demands had already been addressed and maintained that dialogue could resolve the remaining issues.
