Journalist Soumya Vishwanathan Murder Case: Court Delivers Verdict 15 Years Later, All Accused Found Guilty

The Saket Court has delivered a significant verdict in the case of the murder of TV journalist Soumya Vishwanathan. The court has found all five accused guilty in the murder case. Soumya Vishwanathan was fatally shot on September 30, 2008, while she was returning home in her car.

The police had initially attributed the motive for her murder to robbery and had applied the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against the accused in this murder case. In March 2009, the police had arrested five individuals – Ravi Kapoor, Amit Shukla, Baljit Malik, Ajay Kumar, and Ajay Sethi – who have been in custody ever since. All of them had been charged under MCOCA in relation to the murder case.

Despite extensive efforts by the police, there was no breakthrough in the case for several months. In 2009, during the investigation of the kidnapping and subsequent murder of Jigisha Ghose, who worked at a call center in Vasant Vihar, a CCTV footage led to the identification of Baljit Malik. Subsequently, Ravi Kapoor was also arrested, and both of them admitted to their involvement in Soumya’s murder. After their confession, all five accused were arrested, and MCOCA charges were filed against them.

In the events of September 30, 2008, Soumya Vishwanathan was driving her car back home from work. In Vasant Kunj, the accused spotted her and started following her car. They attempted to overtake her car, but when they were unsuccessful, Ravi Kapoor pulled out his pistol and fired at Soumya before fleeing the scene.

After being shot in the head, Soumya’s car went out of control and crashed into a pole. Initially, the police had considered this incident as an accident. However, it was only after the post-mortem report revealed a gunshot wound to Soumya’s head that her death was determined to be a murder. Subsequently, the police registered a murder case in Vasant Kunj police station.
