Vice President of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), Prof Salim Engineer, has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic landslide that struck the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage route near Ardhkuwari, in Katra, Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir.
In his official statement, Prof Salim Engineer offered heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the disaster.
“We express our grief over the tragic loss of lives caused by this massive landslide. Triggered by incessant rainfall, the calamity has taken several innocent lives, injured many, and caused serious distress to the families of pilgrims and local residents,” he said.
Prof Engineer acknowledged the swift response of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Indian Army, J&K Police, and local volunteers.
He acknowledged their tireless efforts on the ground and directly urged the authorities to intensify rescue operations and locate those still trapped under the debris.
“The pain of those affected must be shared by all Indians. The people of Katra must not feel isolated in this moment of hardship. We urge citizens across the country to express solidarity with them and support relief efforts,” he added.
Emphasising the recurring nature of such natural disasters in the region, Prof Salim Engineer urged both central and state governments to formulate a comprehensive disaster management strategy.
“Preparedness should not be reactive. The government must implement clearly defined Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for landslides, flash floods, and other such calamities to minimise loss of life,” he stressed.
The JIH Vice President also appealed for a special relief package to ensure not only immediate relief but long-term rehabilitation of affected families.
“It is vital that those who have lost loved ones, homes, or livelihoods receive sustained support to rebuild their lives with dignity,” he said.
Prof Salim Engineer concluded his statement by calling the tragedy a national concern, highlighting the need for both compassion and coordinated action.
He reiterated JIH’s commitment to standing with those affected and urged the government to prioritise both emergency response and disaster resilience planning in vulnerable regions like Katra.
