As the Prime Minister celebrates his 75th birthday on Wednesday, Laxmi Kumari, a resident of Chano village in Hazaribagh district, Jharkhand, has extended her heartfelt wishes.
“May PM Modi live for a thousand years and keep supporting us in our businesses,” she said.
Laxmi, a beneficiary of the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM), spoke to IANS about her journey.
“Earlier, we were without any work, but now, thanks to the canteen under the scheme launched by the government led by PM Modi, we can even afford our children’s school fees,” she shared.
Her story illustrates the transformative impact of NRLM in empowering rural women.
Hailing from Sadar block, Laxmi received vocational training from the Rural Self Employment Training Institute (RSETI) under the NRLM, which enabled her to start a food canteen at Vinoba Bhave University.
Affectionately called the ‘Cafe Wali Didi’ on campus, Laxmi’s canteen serves affordable and nutritious meals to students and faculty.
Her culinary skills and dedication have earned her respect while promoting hygiene and healthy eating among young learners.
Life before NRLM was a daily struggle.
“There were many days when we didn’t know how to pay the bills or the school fees,” she recalled.
The programme, she says, provided her with skills and confidence, helping her rise above poverty.
Today, her income supports her household and allows her children to pursue education, offering them a better future.
Laxmi expressed her gratitude to the Prime Minister on his birthday, saying, “Modi Ji is like a brother and father to us women. His plans have given us not just financial independence but also confidence and hope. We feel respected and valued.”
Laxmi Kumari’s journey highlights the broader impact of NRLM in fostering self-reliant women who contribute meaningfully to their communities. Her story serves as a testament to the Prime Minister’s commitment to empowering rural women and enhancing livelihoods nationwide.
