On Tuesday, the Congress Party has unveiled its initial slate of 21 candidates for the upcoming Jharkhand assembly elections, highlighting a commitment to gender diversity with five women among the nominees.
This marks a significant step toward greater female representation in the state’s political landscape.
Several sitting MLAs have retained their tickets. Notable among them are Irfan Ansari (Jamtara), Badal Patralekh (Jarmundi), and Deepika Pandey Singh (Mahagama).
The party has also re-nominated Kumar Jayamangal (Bermo), Purnima Niraj Singh (Jharia), and Amba Prasad Sahu (Barkagaon), while Banna Gupta will again contest from Jamshedpur West.
Rameshwar Oraon (Lohardaga), Shilpi Neha Tirkey (Mandar), Bhushan Bara (Simdega), and Rajesh Kachhap (Khijri) are other sitting MLAs featured on the list, showcasing the party’s confidence in their leadership.
Additionally, the party has given the nod to new faces like Ajoy Kumar (Jamshedpur East), Munna Singh (Hazaribagh Sadar), and Jaiprakash Patel (Mandu), signaling a mix of experience and fresh perspectives.
However, the party has delayed decisions regarding the candidacies of Umashankar Akela (Barhi) and Alamgir Alam (Pakur).
Alamgir Alam’s candidature remains uncertain due to his involvement in a money laundering case, which has raised concerns within the party.
This list follows an intensive deliberation by the Congress Screening Committee held in New Delhi, reflecting a strategic approach to contesting the elections.
Out of the 81 seats in Jharkhand’s assembly, Congress plans to field candidates in 28 to 29 constituencies, balancing alliances and regional dynamics.
With the elections approaching, the Congress is positioning itself as a formidable force, emphasizing inclusivity and a mix of seasoned politicians and newcomers to secure a win in Jharkhand.
