Jaishankar Hails Carney’s Commitment To Strengthening Bilateral Relations

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday called on Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in New Delhi ahead of the visiting leader’s bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Following the meeting, Jaishankar expressed appreciation for Carney’s approach to strengthening ties. “Delighted to call on Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada in New Delhi this morning. Appreciate his commitment towards charting a forward-looking partnership,” he stated.

Accompanied by his wife, Diana Fox Carney, Carney is on his first official visit to India from February 27 to March 2, travelling from Mumbai to New Delhi for key engagements.

He will hold delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Modi at Hyderabad House to review progress under the India–Canada Strategic Partnership and outline future cooperation.

The leaders will assess developments since their meetings in June 2025 and at the G20 Summit in November 2025, where India set a USD 50 billion trade target for 2030.

Discussions will span trade, energy, critical minerals, education and global issues.

In a post on X after arriving in New Delhi, Carney described India and Canada as ‘two confident and ambitious nations’ seeking to build bold partnerships in energy, talent, innovation and artificial intelligence to enhance shared prosperity and security.

The leaders will also attend the India–Canada CEOs Forum in New Delhi, highlighting economic cooperation and private sector engagement.

The MEA said the visit comes at a crucial stage in normalising bilateral ties. Both Prime Ministers have agreed to pursue a balanced partnership based on mutual respect and growing economic complementarities.

In Mumbai, Carney met business leaders and investors, calling India the world’s fastest-growing major economy and expressing readiness to expand opportunities.

His visit signals renewed momentum in bilateral relations.
