External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has reaffirmed India’s position regarding allegations made by Canada concerning the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. He emphasized that India does not engage in such activities as a matter of policy. This diplomatic dispute arose after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed to have “credible allegations” of India’s involvement in Nijjar’s June killing on Canadian soil.
The situation escalated when a US diplomat suggested that there was “shared intelligence among Five Eyes partners” supporting Trudeau’s allegations about Indian agents’ involvement. In response, Jaishankar clarified that he was neither part of the Five Eyes alliance nor the FBI.
Speaking at the Council for Foreign Relations in New York, Jaishankar highlighted organized crime in Canada, particularly its connections to secessionist forces, violence, and extremism. He expressed concern about Canada’s apparent tolerance of such activities for political reasons.
India firmly rejected Canada’s “baseless” allegations, insisting that specific evidence was yet to be provided by the Trudeau administration. Jaishankar assured Canada that India would take action if given specific information about Nijjar’s killing, indicating their willingness to investigate.
During his address at the 78th UN General Assembly, Jaishankar called on UN member states to resist “political convenience” in their responses to terrorism and violence, indirectly criticizing Canada. He also emphasized the importance of respecting territorial integrity and non-interference in internal affairs on a global scale. Additionally, he suggested that the era of a few nations dictating the world’s agenda was over, which many interpreted as veiled references to China and Canada.
This summary provides a more detailed overview of the diplomatic tensions between India and Canada and External Affairs Minister Jaishankar’s statements regarding the matter.
