On Wednesday, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh addressed a press conference at Delhi’s AICC headquarters.
Congress General Secretary stated that Mallikarjun Kharge, the party chief, will decide on candidates for the Rae Bareli and Amethi Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh.
Jairam Ramesh said, “CEC has authorized the Congress President for Rae Bareli and Amethi. He will take the decision soon, and you will know officially in the next 24 to 30 hours.”
The Central Election Committee of Congress convened on April 27 to deliberate on candidates for the remaining seats in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
As per reports, the UP Congress proposed the Gandhi family’s candidature for Amethi and Rae Bareli, leaving the decision to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.
So far, Congress has announced 308 candidates for the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections, which began on 19 April.
Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi is seeking re-election from the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency.
During the 2019 elections, Rahul Gandhi lost to BJP’s Smriti Irani in Amethi. He held that seat for 15 years.
Earlier on 29 April, Smriti Irani, Union Minister for Women and Child Development, filed her nomination for the Amethi Lok Sabha seat. She expressed confidence in BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s victory.
Irani highlighted PM Modi’s contributions to Amethi. She cited achievements like providing residents with homes, toilets, water connections, and electricity.
Responding to queries about Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s potential candidature from Amethi and Rae Bareli, Irani stated that she can only contest if there’s an opponent against her.
