IWI Deepens ‘Make In India’ Push; Eyes Local Production Of Advanced Rifle Systems

The Israeli defence company Israel Weapon Industries has reinforced its long-term commitment to India’s ‘Make in India’ programme. Its chief executive, Shuki Schwartz, said the firm is deepening its involvement in local manufacturing and intends to expand its presence significantly.

IWI already produces key weapon components in India and plans broader collaboration in the coming years.

IWI has supplied defence equipment to India for more than two decades. The company increased its local footprint after joining the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

Schwartz confirmed that the firm is already manufacturing barrels in India. He said IWI remains open to wider technology transfer and additional Indian production, depending on requirements and the scale of demand from Indian security agencies.

The company is holding early discussions to manufacture the Arbel System in India. The Arbel is described as the world’s first fully computerised fire-control system for small arms.

If local production moves forward, India could begin building some of the most advanced rifle technologies within its own defence industry.

Major Defence Expansion

IWI’s India strategy centres on its joint venture with the Adani Group, known as PLR Systems. Through this partnership, the firm focuses on manufacturing light weapons and related systems.

The goal is to supply these products to the armed forces, police, and other domestic security units.

Schwartz noted that India’s defence market is large and diverse, offering significant room for multiple manufacturers. He said IWI intends to expand steadily and stay invested in India for the long term.

Looking ahead, IWI’s deeper participation may accelerate India’s push to strengthen domestic defence manufacturing.

Local production can reduce dependence on imports, streamline supply chains, and support faster procurement. Increased availability of cutting-edge technology within India aligns with the country’s drive toward self-reliance in defence.

The rising demand for modern weapon systems, combined with evolving global security challenges, makes India an important market.

The shift toward producing advanced small-arms systems within India may appeal to policymakers seeking to modernise the country’s defence capabilities. For IWI, the move represents not only an expansion of business but also a long-term investment in India’s defence ecosystem.
