Government Places On Record In Rajya Sabha: Over 72,000 Foreign Students Studying In India

India now hosts more than 72,000 foreign students across its higher-education institutions, drawing learners from nearly 200 countries. The government shared this update in the upper house of Parliament, underscoring India’s rising appeal as a global education hub.

The current foreign student count stands at 72,218. These students pursue diverse courses across universities and colleges nationwide. Their growing presence reflects renewed confidence in India’s academic standards, research quality, and institutional strength.

To strengthen world-class education further, the government has sanctioned ₹6,198.99 crore to eight public institutions under the ‘World Class Institutions’ scheme.

This funding forms part of a broader initiative to support institutions with ‘Institution of Eminence’ status. The money aims to upgrade research facilities, improve infrastructure and boost global competitiveness.

India’s higher-education landscape is also gaining unprecedented recognition worldwide. This year, 54 Indian institutions secured positions in major global university rankings.

A decade ago, only 11 institutions made the list. The sharp rise signals improved academic performance and increased international visibility.

Rising Global Appeal

Officials highlight that students from a wide range of countries choose India for its diverse course offerings, affordability and rising global compatibility. They say the surge in foreign enrolment demonstrates India’s growing reputation for reliable and high-quality education.
