India’s Population Is An Asset, Not A Burden: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday asserted that India’s population has always been its greatest strength, rejecting earlier views that treated demographic size as a national challenge.

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha during the Budget Session, he said previous leaders often described population growth as a burden rather than an opportunity.

The Prime Minister recalled historical references to underline his point. He said Jawaharlal Nehru once described India’s population of around 35 crore as a major problem during his tenure.

Prime Minister Modi added that Indira Gandhi later echoed a similar concern, reportedly stating during a foreign visit that India’s population had risen to 57 crore, compounding the country’s difficulties.

PM Modi said such thinking shaped policy choices for decades and limited the country’s ability to harness its human potential. He argued that India never truly accepted the notion that its people were a liability.

Instead, citizens consistently demonstrated resilience, enterprise, and ambition, even when policy frameworks failed to support them adequately.

The Prime Minister said his government views population through the lens of human capital and productivity. He stressed that people drive growth, innovation, and competitiveness when the state invests in skills, education, and opportunity.

According to him, a young and aspirational population gives India a structural advantage in a rapidly ageing global economy.

PM Modi said India’s demographic profile positions it strongly in global supply chains, services, manufacturing, and technology. He noted that countries across the world now recognise India’s workforce as a reliable and scalable asset.

This shift, he said, reflects a broader change in governance philosophy.

The Prime Minister linked this outlook to his administration’s emphasis on reform-oriented and future-ready policies. He said initiatives focused on skilling, entrepreneurship, digital inclusion, and employment creation aim to convert demographic scale into economic value.

PM Modi also underlined that confidence in India’s people has strengthened global trust in the country.

International partners increasingly see India as a stable destination for investment and collaboration, driven by talent and scale.

Concluding his remarks, PM Modi said India’s journey forward rests on empowering its citizens. He reiterated that people are not a problem to be managed, but the nation’s most enduring resource and competitive edge.
