External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar told Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Thursday that India carried out ‘targeted and measured’ strikes on cross-border terror infrastructure following the Pahalgam terror attack.
Jaishankar made the remarks in New Delhi while co-chairing the 20th India-Iran Joint Commission Meeting.
He said India responded to the ‘barbaric’ 22 April attack in Jammu and Kashmir by striking terrorist camps in Pakistan on 7 May.
He stressed that India does not intend to escalate the situation.
“You are visiting India at a time when we are responding to a particularly barbaric terrorist attack. Our response was targeted and measured,” Jaishankar said in his opening remarks.
In response to Iranian concerns over the rising India-Pakistan tensions, Jaishankar assured Araghchi that India seeks no escalation.
“If there are military attacks on us, we will respond very, very firmly,” he added, underlining the need for a ‘good understanding’ of the situation between close partners.
Both ministers led the joint meeting as the two countries marked 75 years of diplomatic ties. Jaishankar noted that bilateral cooperation has progressed in many areas.
He recalled the recent meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Masoud Pezeshkian in Kazan in October 2024 and their phone call on 26 April.
India and Iran also signed MoUs on customs cooperation and medical product regulation during the visit.
Earlier, Araghchi condemned the Pahalgam attack and extended condolences to India. He arrived in New Delhi after visiting Pakistan, where he held talks with his counterpart Ishaq Dar.
