Indian Railways has expanded its operations in North East India by commencing freight train services from Nagaland.
This follows the successful launch of passenger and cargo services in Mizoram, after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Bairabi-Sairang rail line on September 13, 2025, integrating it with the national rail network.
The latest development highlights Indian Railways’ commitment to improving connectivity in the region, fostering economic opportunities, and linking remote areas with national markets.
In September, the Ministry of Railways launched freight train operations from Molvom station in Nagaland.
Railway officials successfully placed the first inward rake, comprising 41 wagons of cement from Telangana, at Molvom on September 24. They followed this milestone by dispatching the first outward rake on September 29, carrying 42 wagons of stone chips from Molvom to Jirania.
These operations mark a significant step in establishing Nagaland as an active node in India’s freight network, facilitating smoother movement of goods and enhancing local trade opportunities.
The Railways also reported that workers unloaded a total of eight rakes at Sairang station in Mizoram last month.
The first rake, arriving on September 14, transported 21 wagons of cement from STAR Cement Siding, Tetelia near Guwahati. Subsequent rakes included shipments of stone chips, automobiles, ready-mix concrete (RMC), and sand from Bairabi.
In addition, Indian Railways booked the first parcel consignment from Sairang on September 19, transporting Anthurium flowers to Anand Vihar Terminal via the parcel van of Train No. 20507 (Sairang–Anand Vihar Terminal, Delhi) Rajdhani Express.
The national transporter emphasised that the growing demand for both passenger and freight services reflects the transformative potential of railway connectivity in the North East.
These links not only provide convenience but also promote economic growth, improve market access for local products, and generate new opportunities for trade and employment.
By integrating remote regions like Nagaland and Mizoram with the national rail network, Indian Railways is helping to reduce logistical challenges and strengthen socio-economic development.
With freight and passenger services now operational in both Nagaland and Mizoram, Indian Railways aims to continue enhancing infrastructure in the North East.
The expansion of rail connectivity is expected to bolster commerce, attract investment, and further integrate the region with the broader Indian economy.
The ongoing initiatives demonstrate the government’s commitment to improving transport links in strategically important areas while providing tangible benefits to local communities through improved trade, employment, and regional development.
