Indian High Commissioner Accuses High-Level Canadian Official of Obstructing Probe in Hardeep Nijjar’s Killing

Canada’s top Indian diplomat, Sanjay Kumar Verma, has called on Ottawa to provide credible evidence to support its allegation that “Indian agents” were involved in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia. India has not received any substantial evidence from Canada or its allies regarding this claim. Verma questioned the lack of evidence and expressed concerns about the direction the investigation has taken.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the chief of the banned Khalistan Tiger Force, was killed outside a gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, in June. The strained relations between Canada and India escalated when India revoked the diplomatic immunity of 41 Canadian diplomats, leading to their departure from India.

Canadian intelligence sources have claimed to intercept communications and receive intelligence from an undisclosed Five Eyes ally implicating Indian operatives in Nijjar’s killing. However, Verma emphasized that diplomatic discourse is privileged and cannot serve as court evidence or be made public.

Regarding extradition requests, Verma stated that such matters are between the two governments and highlighted India’s past requests for extradition from Canada.

Due to safety threats, Mr. Verma revealed that he has been provided with Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) security protection. He expressed concerns about online posters targeting Indian diplomats in Vancouver and Toronto, describing them as “enemies of Canada” or accusing them of operating a “terror house.”

Verma emphasized the importance of rebuilding diplomatic ties and restarting trade negotiations between India and Canada. He stressed the need for professional communication and dialogue while allowing the investigation into Nijjar’s death to proceed. He also urged Canada to prevent its soil from being used by groups challenging India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, including Khalistan sympathizers.
