Indian Army Renames 246 British Era Roads Buildings And Facilities

The Indian Army has renamed 246 roads, buildings and infrastructure facilities that carried British-era names, continuing the national effort to shed colonial symbols.

The initiative reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to move away from a colonial mindset and honour India’s own heroes and traditions.

According to defence officials, the renamed locations include 124 roads, 77 residential colonies, 27 buildings and military facilities, and 18 other structures such as parks, training areas, playgrounds, gates and helipads.

All new names commemorate gallantry award winners, war heroes, freedom fighters and distinguished military leaders.

Several prominent renamings have taken place in Delhi Cantonment. Kirby Place has become Kenuguruse Vihar, while Mall Road is now Arun Khetarpal Marg, honouring the Param Vir Chakra awardee.

In Ambala Cantonment, authorities renamed Patterson Road Quarters to Dhan Singh Thapa Enclave.

They redesignated New Horn Line in Mathura as Veer Abdul Hamid Lines, while Jaipur Cantonment saw Queens Line Road become Sundar Singh Marg.

In Bareilly, officials renamed the New Birdwood Line as Thimayya Colony, and in Mhow Cantonment, they changed Malcolm Lines to Piru Singh Lines.

At the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, the administration renamed Collins Block as Nubra Block and Kingsway Block as Kargil Block.

Other changes include the Lashram Jyotin Singh Sports Complex at Rangapahar and Hangpan Dada Marg at Jakhama Military Station.

In one of the most symbolic moves, authorities in Kolkata renamed Fort William, the headquarters of the Army’s Eastern Command, as Vijay Durg.

They also renamed George Gate as Shivaji Dwar and rechristened Kitchener House as Field Marshal Manekshaw Bhavan, underscoring India’s commitment to honouring its own legacy.
