On September 4, the Indian Army Aviation rescued two South Koreans stranded at 17,000 ft in Ladakh’s Kongmaru La Pass.
At 8:05 PM, the Army received an urgent evacuation request for Hyun Woo Kim and his wife, who were trapped in the snow-covered region. By 8:20 PM, the Army Aviation helicopter squadron had mobilised for the operation.
The mission required a precision landing on an unprepared helipad using Night Vision Goggles (NVG), a manoeuvre demanding exceptional skill and calm under pressure.
The snow-laden terrain, razor-sharp ridgelines, icy winds, and poor visibility made the operation highly perilous. Despite the hostile environment, the pilots guided their aircraft safely and touched down at around 9:15 PM.
Medical authorities immediately received and treated the couple after the Army swiftly evacuated them.
The successful execution of the NVG-assisted mission reflected the Army’s unmatched training and professionalism. It showcased the Aviation Wing’s skill under pressure and the Army’s readiness in tough terrains.
The rescue carried strong humanitarian undertones, reaffirming India’s commitment to aid foreign nationals in distress. The Army has consistently played a vital role beyond its primary mandate of border defence, often leading humanitarian missions across the country.
The operation came at a time when floods wreaked havoc in northern states such as Uttarakhand, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir. Alongside other agencies, the Indian Army has been delivering food, evacuating people, and providing medical assistance through helicopters and drones.
The Ladakh rescue reinforces the Indian Army’s legacy of courage and humanitarian service.
