An Indore-bound Air India Express flight from Delhi reported a mid-air engine fault on Friday. Pilots issued a ‘PAN-PAN’ call to Air Traffic Control (ATC) before landing safely. All 161 passengers and crew remained unharmed.
The internationally recognised ‘PAN-PAN’ signal is used to flag urgent but non-life-threatening situations. It alerts ATC and ground services to provide immediate support.
Flight IX 1028 was approaching descent into Indore when the crew noticed a suspected oil filter issue. Following aviation protocol, the pilots took precautionary steps and informed ATC without delay.
The aircraft landed safely at Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport. It was delayed by about 20 minutes. An Air India Express spokesperson confirmed that the pilots followed standard operating procedures.
“Due to a suspected oil filter issue during descent into Indore, following standard operating procedures, the crew landed safely. Our pilots are well trained to carry out such precautionary measures,” the spokesperson said.
All 161 passengers and crew members disembarked safely. “The crew of this plane with flight number IX 1028 and all passengers on board are completely safe,” the airline added.
This marks the second mid-air scare in recent weeks. An IndiGo flight from Delhi to Goa recently made an emergency landing in Mumbai after an engine issue.
On 19 July, another Air India Express flight to Phuket returned to Hyderabad shortly after take-off due to a technical fault. The crew chose to turn back as a safety measure.
Air India Express, which operates Boeing 737 Max aircraft on domestic and international routes, reiterated that passenger safety remains its top priority.
