India strongly condemned Canada’s accusations on Monday, labeling them as “preposterous imputations.” The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) accused the Canadian government of providing space to extremists and terrorists who harass Indian diplomats and community leaders.
The MEA issued a statement in response to Canada’s claim that Indian High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma and other diplomats were “persons of interest” in an investigation. India called these claims politically motivated and linked to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s vote-bank politics.
India criticized Trudeau for not providing evidence to support his earlier accusations. The MEA stated that despite India’s repeated requests, Canada has failed to back its claims with facts. The ministry accused Canada of smearing India to cover up its own internal political issues, especially in the context of foreign interference in Canadian politics.
According to the statement, Canada’s actions fit a pattern of hostility toward India, which has been evident since Trudeau’s 2018 visit. India highlighted that his government includes individuals who support extremist and separatist agendas.
India expressed concerns over the safety of Hindu Canadians, who have been targeted by pro-Khalistani groups. The MEA warned that further deterioration in bilateral ties would harm Canada.
The statement also detailed the “principle of reciprocity” in India’s diplomatic relations, suggesting further actions could be taken in response to Canada’s latest move. India reserves the right to take necessary steps if these accusations persist.
