Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said India is steadily moving towards a model where products, designs, technology and intellectual property are developed and owned within the country.
Speaking at the 10th edition of the India Mobile Congress (IMC), PM Modi said the nation is undergoing a major shift from being a technology user to becoming a global centre for innovation and creation.
PM Modi stated the telecom industry is witnessing this change through a combination of policy reforms, domestic production, technological advancement and the development of intellectual property.
According to the Prime Minister, the government is revamping outdated legislation, offering incentives and bringing regulatory changes to strengthen India’s presence across the telecom value chain.
PM Modi highlighted the Telecommunications Act and the GatiShakti portal as key measures supporting a stronger ecosystem for telecom growth. He said India’s ‘reform express’ is gaining momentum as the country works to reduce its dependence on imported technology and build greater self-reliance.
The Prime Minister pointed to developments in semiconductor manufacturing, noting that commercial production has started at five locations across the country. He said the next phase of the India Semiconductor Mission would concentrate on developing the complete semiconductor supply chain within India.
“In the last 10-12 years, the mobile phone has emerged as a vital tool of good governance, serving as the absolute core of the Digital India vision,” asserted PM Modi.
Reflecting on India’s 5G journey, PM Modi recalled the technology’s launch at the India Mobile Congress in 2022. He said 5G infrastructure has since expanded to more than 5.5 lakh base stations, covering every district across the country.
The Prime Minister further said internet speeds have risen tenfold, highlighting the scale of India’s digital transformation over the past decade.
