India on Tuesday strongly condemned the attacks on commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, describing the violence against seafarers as unacceptable and calling for the immediate restoration of safe navigation through international waterways.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said it was deeply concerned after two vessels, MT Al Bahiyah and MT Mombasa, came under attack while passing through the strategic waterway. Together, the ships carried 46 crew members, including 30 Indian seafarers.
According to the Ministry, MT Al Bahiyah had 12 Indian nationals on board. One Indian seafarer lost his life in the attack, while another sustained injuries.
MT Mombasa carried 18 Indian nationals, of whom nine suffered injuries, including two reported to be in critical condition.
The MEA expressed heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and wished a swift recovery to the injured. It said India’s Mission and Post in the United Arab Emirates are closely monitoring the situation and remain in constant contact with UAE authorities to provide every possible assistance to the affected Indian crew members.
The Ministry also confirmed that it summoned the Deputy Chief of Mission of the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi and lodged a strong diplomatic protest over the attacks.
