India Eyes Washington: Key Trade Talks Ahead

India and the United States are making steady progress toward finalising the first stage of the Bilateral Trade Agreement. This week, a team of Indian officials will journey to Washington, DC, to continue the discussions.

“Talks between the two nations are progressing well,” a government official stated.

India has offered to increase imports of oil and gas from the US, which will help reduce the trade surplus and diversify energy sources, ensuring a reliable supply amid global geopolitical uncertainties.

Additionally, India is likely to acquire more renewable energy technologies from the US as part of the trade package. This step aimed at strengthening the country’s efforts to combat climate change.

The appointment of Sergio Gor as the US ambassador to India precedes renewed bilateral engagement.

Gor met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi to discuss defence, trade and technology. The session underscored the critical role of mineral resources for both countries’ strategic and economic interests.

“The US values its relationship with India and, under the strong leadership of President Donald J Trump and Prime Minister Modi, I am optimistic about the days ahead for both of our nations. President Trump considers Prime Minister Modi a great and personal friend. In fact, just before I left for New Delhi, they had an incredible phone call, and that is something that will continue over the weeks and months ahead,” Gor said.

Earlier, a US delegation visited New Delhi in September for trade discussions, followed by an Indian delegation led by Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal travelling to Washington.

During these talks, India offered concessions to the US, including an agreement to import additional American defence and energy products.

On September 16, a US team led by Brendan Lynch met Indian trade officials in New Delhi.

Relations between the countries had started to improve. Positive messages from President Trump and Prime Minister Modi gave new hope for a trade agreement.

President Trump had earlier posted on Truth Social on September 9 that talks were ongoing.

He wrote, “I feel certain that there will be no difficulty in coming to a successful conclusion for both of our Great Countries!”
