Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday described the conclusion of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) as a defining moment in bilateral relations, thanking European leaders for their sustained commitment and constructive spirit that made the pact possible.
“This agreement will deepen economic ties, create opportunities for our people and strengthen the India-Europe partnership for a prosperous future,” PM Modi said in a post on X after the “mother of all deals” was reached. He added that India and Europe have taken an important step forward, with the FTA opening new pathways for growth, investment, and strategic cooperation.
Announcing the signing of the FTA during a joint press conference at Hyderabad House, PM Modi said the partnership between two major economies would create fresh opportunities for businesses, consumers, and the skilled workforce.
He underlined that the agreement reflects growing trust, shared values, and a common commitment to peace, stability, and cooperation amid an uncertain global environment.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said the 16th India-EU Summit would be remembered as a historic milestone where the world’s fourth and second largest economies joined hands to script a new chapter in global trade. “The agreement will unlock opportunities across sectors, benefiting businesses and people, and contributing to growth and prosperity on both sides,” he posted on X.
With a combined market estimated at over Rs 2,091.6 lakh crore ($24 trillion), the FTA brings unprecedented opportunities for nearly 2 billion people across India and the EU. According to the government, the agreement delivers market access for more than 99 per cent of India’s exports by trade value, while safeguarding policy space for sensitive sectors and reinforcing developmental priorities.
Despite steadily growing trade, the government noted significant untapped potential due to the scale of both markets. The FTA, it said, provides an unparalleled pathway for India and the EU to emerge as major economic partners for each other.
