India Emerging As Global Hub For Healing Through Yoga And Research: PM Modi

International Day Of Yoga: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday emphasised India’s evolving role as a global centre for wellness, stating that the nation is enhancing the science of yoga through modern research and becoming a leading destination for healing.

Speaking at the main national event for the 11th International Day of Yoga at RK Beach, PM Modi addressed a gathering of over three lakh people who performed the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) along the scenic coastline.

Highlighting the role of research institutions, PM Modi noted that premier medical institutes like the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, are playing a significant role in validating the benefits of yoga.

“For the expansion of yoga in the world, India is empowering the science of yoga through modern research,” PM Modi asserted.

He further added, “We are also encouraging evidence-based therapy in the field of yoga in the country’s medical and research institutions. Delhi AIIMS has done a good job in this regard. Its research has shown that yoga has a critical role in the treatment of cardiac and neurological disorders, and it also plays an important role in women’s health and mental well-being.”

Prime Minister Modi further asserted that India is promoting evidence-based yoga therapies through its medical and research ecosystem and pointed out the increasing role of digital platforms in this mission.

“Digital technology has also played a key role in this. Over 10 lakh events were registered through the yoga portal and the Yogandhra portal,” the PM noted.

‘Heal in India’ and wellness tourism

The Prime Minister attributed growing national interest in yoga to a broader transformation taking place across India.

“We all know that the ‘heal in India’ mantra is also becoming popular around the world. India is becoming the best destination for healing for the entire world. Yoga also has a key role in this,” PM Modi remarked.

The Prime Minister also lauded the drafting of the Common Yoga Protocol and various institutional efforts, including the training of over 6.5 lakh certified yoga volunteers, accreditation of around 130 institutions, and integration of a 10-day yoga module into medical education.

Efforts are also underway to integrate yoga more deeply into public health infrastructure.

Trained instructors are being appointed at Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, and special e-Ayush visas are being issued to promote India’s wellness tourism globally.

Addressing lifestyle issues, the Prime Minister spoke about the global challenge of obesity and called for greater awareness around healthy living.

“Reducing oil intake, avoiding junk food, and practising yoga—these are simple but powerful steps to maintain fitness,” he said, recalling a personal initiative encouraging a 10% reduction in cooking oil usage.

A Global movement for harmony

PM Modi concluded by urging the world to adopt yoga as a global movement that fosters inner balance, societal harmony, and international unity.

“Let’s envision a future where yoga becomes a daily routine for every individual and a shared heritage for all of humanity,” Prime Minister Modi said.

The large-scale event in Visakhapatnam saw the participation of Andhra Pradesh Governor S Abdul Nazeer, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, Union Minister of State for Health Prakash Jadhav, and several other central and state ministers.

In a record-setting display, around 3.19 lakh people performed yoga along a 28-kilometre stretch from RK Beach to Bhogapuram.

Participants from 8 lakh locations across India and abroad joined in, making this year’s celebration one of the largest yoga events ever held.
