India Cuts GHG Emissions By 7.93% In 2020; Strengthens Global Climate Leadership

India reduced its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 7.93% in 2020, reinforcing its commitment to climate action, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav said at the World Sustainable Development Summit 2025 on Wednesday. He highlighted India’s leadership in global climate efforts, stating that the Global South is now driving the climate agenda.

In its fourth biennial report to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), India reported a 7.93% drop in national GHG emissions compared to 2019. The country has also cut its emission intensity of GDP by 36% between 2005 and 2020, showcasing its efforts to decouple economic growth from emissions.

Covid-19 Impact On GHG Emissions Reduction

Experts suggest that the decline in GHG emissions in 2020 was also influenced by the economic slowdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Indian economy contracted by 7.7% in 2020-21, affecting industries and supply chains. The government later took steps to revive economic growth while maintaining its climate commitments.

Prime Minister of Guyana, Brigadier Mark Phillip, and Brazil’s Environment Minister, Marina Silva, also attended the event.

India’s Climate Leadership And Future Goals

Yadav reiterated India’s dedication to inclusive and ambitious climate action. He urged developed nations to fulfill their financial and technological commitments under the Paris Agreement. He also stressed the need for increased climate adaptation finance to support vulnerable regions.

He outlined India’s long-term climate strategy, including its goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070. He noted that India has already reduced the emission intensity of GDP by 36% against its 45% target for 2030. The 2025 Union Budget focuses on energy security, clean energy expansion, and green technology manufacturing.

Yadav called for global governance reforms, emphasizing the need for equity and justice in climate negotiations. He urged international cooperation to strengthen Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and ensure collective action against climate change.
