India-China Ties Need Pragmatic Approach For Stability

India’s latest effort to stabilise relations with China needs a pragmatic approach, with dialogue, economic cooperation and strategic preparedness emerging as key priorities, according to a report.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping discussed the future of bilateral ties on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi last week.

During the meeting, PM Modi stressed the importance of respecting each other’s core concerns and following the principles of mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest.

However, former Indian Police Service officer Ashok Kumar Abrol cautioned against viewing the renewed engagement as an immediate transformation in bilateral relations.

Writing for Saviours, Abrol said dialogue could improve stability but would not erase the historical legacy of the 1962 war or resolve the two countries’ strategic differences overnight.

He argued that sustained engagement could support predictable trade, better market access and more reliable supply chains, creating economic benefits for both sides.

Global Search for Alternative Manufacturing

For India, the global search for alternative manufacturing centres presents an opportunity. Abrol said India’s large domestic market, young workforce, expanding infrastructure, digital capabilities and entrepreneurial ecosystem could support manufacturing growth.

However, he stressed that India must strengthen infrastructure, energy competitiveness, logistics, skilled manpower, regulatory stability, technology and research and development.

The report described a balanced approach towards China as the way forward, combining strength with restraint, self-reliance with openness, competition with cooperation and strategic independence with economic engagement.

Abrol also argued that India does not need to replicate China or defeat it to achieve economic success. Instead, he said India must build enough technological and economic strength to engage China and the wider world confidently.

The report concluded that differences between India and China will remain, but stronger institutions, economic capabilities and sustained dialogue can help prevent disagreements from escalating into disputes or conflict.
