Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared on Monday that India and Canada will deepen defence collaboration and institutionalise a structured security mechanism.
He confirmed the creation of an India-Canada Defence Dialogue following comprehensive discussions with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in New Delhi.
Addressing the joint press conference, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that expanding defence and security cooperation reflects deep confidence.
He added that it demonstrates the growing maturity of bilateral relations.
PM Modi said both nations will strengthen defence manufacturing partnerships, enhance maritime domain awareness, and intensify military exchanges.
He formally announced the decision to establish the dedicated defence dialogue framework.
Prime Minister Modi warmly received Carney on his first visit to India as Prime Minister and described the trip as a significant milestone.
He recalled their earlier interaction at the G7 Summit in Canada last year, where Carney had extended generous hospitality.
PM Modi noted that since their initial meeting, bilateral engagement has gained renewed vigour, and trust has strengthened steadily.
Highlighting economic priorities, he set an ambitious target to raise bilateral trade to 50 billion US dollars by 2030.
Prime Minister Modi said both leaders resolved to expedite the finalisation of the India-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement.
He stressed that unlocking the full potential of economic ties remains a principal objective.
PM Modi affirmed that the agreement would generate fresh investment flows and employment opportunities in both countries.
He noted that Canadian pension funds have already invested nearly 100 billion US dollars in India, underscoring strong confidence in India’s growth trajectory.
The Prime Minister identified value addition in agriculture, agri-technology innovation and food security as shared priorities. He announced the establishment of an India–Canada Pulse Protein Centre of Excellence in India.
On clean energy cooperation, PM Modi welcomed Canada’s decision to join the International Solar Alliance and the Global Biofuel Alliance.
He confirmed that the two nations will convene the India-Canada Renewable Energy and Storage Summit later this year.
In civil nuclear cooperation, he referenced a landmark long-term uranium supply agreement and pledged collaboration on small modular and advanced reactors.
Prime Minister Modi described people-to-people engagement as the cornerstone of bilateral ties.
He announced new university partnerships in artificial intelligence, healthcare, agriculture and innovation, alongside plans for Canadian universities to establish campuses in India.
