India has asked the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to stop funding Pakistan. The move follows the Pakistan-sponsored terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that killed 26 people.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman raised the issue during a meeting with ADB President Masato Kanda. The meeting took place on Monday at the ADB Annual Meeting in Milan, Italy.
Government sources said Sitharaman demanded an end to ADB funding for Pakistan. The proposal was a key point in her discussion with Kanda.
India has already taken strong steps after the Pahalgam attack. It has downgraded diplomatic ties with Pakistan. It has also suspended the Indus Waters Treaty signed in 1960.
This suspension will reduce the water supply to Pakistan over time. The action adds to pressure on Islamabad after the deadly strike.
India also plans to push for Pakistan’s return to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list. Officials said New Delhi will urge FATF to review Pakistan’s record on terror financing.
Sitharaman also outlined India’s economic reforms during the meeting and spoke about GST, corporate tax cuts, and the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code.
She said India promotes private-sector-led growth. She invited ADB to test new financing tools in India.
The Finance Minister said these steps align with PM Modi’s Viksit Bharat vision for 2047.
Sitharaman is leading the Indian delegation at the ADB event from 4 to 7 May. The event includes delegates from member nations and global finance institutions.
She will take part in the Governors’ Business Session and the Plenary Session. She will also join a seminar on cross-border cooperation and climate resilience.
