Independence Day 2026: Security Agencies Alert Over Possible ISI Infiltration Bid

Indian security agencies have heightened vigilance across the country following intelligence warnings that Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence may attempt an attack or infiltration around Independence Day.

Officials said the ISI could exploit the security focus on Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir during the 15 August celebrations.

Agencies suspect that Pakistan-backed groups may attempt to infiltrate Jammu and Kashmir or enter India through the Bangladesh border.

Intelligence officials also warned that attackers could target tier-two cities, where security arrangements may be less extensive than in major metropolitan areas.

Agencies remain particularly alert in Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir and Delhi.

Officials believe the ISI may seek to divert attention from unrest in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Balochistan. They also cautioned that misleading intelligence signals could direct security agencies towards Delhi or Kashmir while attackers plan an operation elsewhere.

The Border Security Force launched Operation Alert along the Pakistan border on 10 August.

The exercise will continue until 17 August, with senior BSF officers supervising increased surveillance, patrolling and deployment.

Officials said intelligence reports indicated possible infiltration and smuggling attempts during this period.

The Centre also plans to establish nearly 40 Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau units in districts along the Bangladesh border in West Bengal.

The expansion will strengthen the Intelligence Bureau’s permanent operational presence and support real-time information gathering.

Security officials said continuous monitoring remains essential because border areas regularly report infiltration, smuggling and extremist activity.

Agencies have deployed additional personnel and intensified coordination to detect and prevent any threat ahead of Independence Day.
