In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the training of Persons with Disabilities/specially-abled persons in the “Product Development Program” was inaugurated at People’s Action Group of Inclusion & Rights (PAGIR), Leh. The program intends to empower PWDs with creative skills in Product Design and to provide them with the knowledge and skills to create quality market-ready products such as bags, diary covers, toys, and much more according to the resources available.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by the esteemed presence of Mrs. Neelam Mishra, the First Lady of Ladakh, who was the Chief Guest of the inauguration ceremony. Mrs. Mishra’s presence underscored the significance of the program, emphasizing the commitment of the administration to empower and uplift the lives of persons with disabilities and to motivate PAGIR to do better in product development. The First Lady emphasized the administration’s dedication to the inclusive development of society.
Mrs. Neelam highlighted key components of the handcrafted products, such as attractiveness, color combinations, logo and branding, design thinking, and an unwavering commitment to quality.
She emphasized it is essential to make a product stand out in a crowded marketplace with its quality and uniqueness. The right choice of colors can evoke emotions, convey messages, and set the tone for products. She advised, colors are a powerful tool in design and can be used strategically to connect with the target audience and communicate the essence of the brand.
The first lady pointed out, that a well-crafted logo and a consistent branding strategy give a product a personality. She stressed the importance of quality and continuous improvement in every aspect of product development and further stressed the development of products unique to Ladakh.
The Commissioner Secretary of Social & Tribal Welfare/Technical Education and Skill Development/ Mission Director Ladakh Skill Development Mission, UT Ladakh Padma Angmo stressed the importance of design and quality finished products that are market ready. She added that quality products of PAGIR could be utilized by various Govt. Departments of the UT Administration in various events/ offices.
The Director of the Social & Tribal Welfare Department, UT Ladakh Tashi Dolma said the program aims to provide individuals with disabilities/specially-abled persons the necessary training and skills to excel in the field of product development, offering them a pathway to self-reliance and financial independence. This program signifies a beacon of hope for persons with disabilities/specially-abled persons, offering them a chance to harness their creativity, skills, and talents, and contribute to society, she stated.
The designer Neeji Bansal stated that the program is a momentous step towards a more inclusive and equitable society, ensuring that no one is left behind in the journey of progress and development. PAGIR is already developing beautiful products from waste, and this training intends to add more value to their products by small interventions of design, enabling them to sell their quality products at good prices, she added.
In the 10-day training, the participants/attendees will receive training in various aspects of product development, equipping them with the tools they need to succeed in the ever-evolving world of business and the fashion industry.
Senior Accounts Officer TE&SD/LSDM, Ms. Stanzin Donsal, District Social Welfare Officer Leh, Ms. Nilza Angmo, President PAGIR, Sh. Tsewang Dorjey, OSD TE&SD, Sh. Abied Hussain, Consultant TE&SD, Ms. Syma, and trainees of the training along with staff of PAGIR were also present during the inauguration.
The program was organized under the aegis of the Technical Education and Skill Development Department (TE&SD), Ladakh Skill Development Mission (LSDM), UT Ladakh, and supported by the Department of Information & Public Relations, UT Ladakh.
