IMD: Biparjoy To Cross Saurashtra-Kutch Coast On June 15, Has Intensified Into An Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm

On Sunday, the India Meteorological Department stated that the very severe cyclonic storm ‘Biparjoy’ intensified into an extremely severe cyclonic storm and is expected to cross Saurashtra-Kutch and neighboring Pakistan shores as a very severe cyclonic storm (VSCS) on June 15.

On June 11 morning, the IMD reported that the very strong cyclonic storm ‘Biparjoy’ over east central Arabian Sea lay centered about 480 kilometres south-southwest of Porbandar, 530 km south-southwest of Dwarka, and 610 km south-southwest of Naliya in Kutch.

IMD tweeted, “Cyclone Alert for Saurashtra and Kutch Coast: Yellow Message. ESCS BIPARJOY lay over the east-central Arabian Sea at 0830 IST today,460 km SSW of Porbandar,510 km SSW of Dwarka, and 600 km SSW of Naliya. To cross Saurashtra and Kutch and adj Pakistan coasts around noon of 15 June as VSCS”, through its official Twitter handle.


The IMD issued an advisory in the early hours of June 11 stating that during the day, wind speeds will reach 40-50 kmph with gusts up to 60 kmph along and off the coasts of Saurashtra and Kutch.

It will intensify to 45-55 kmph with gusts to 65 kmph on June 12, and 50-60 kmph with gusts to 70 kmph on June 13 and 14.

The IMD predicts squally wind of 55-65 kmph with gusts up to 75 kmph along the coast of Saurashtra coast on June 15.

Sea conditions along and off the coastlines of Saurashtra and Kutch are expected to be rough to very rough through June 14, and very rough to high on June 15.

The IMD has advised a total halt of fishing operations in the region til June 15 and has asked fishermen not to venture into the central Arabian Sea, north Arabian Sea, and along and off the Saurashtra-Kutch beaches until June 15.

It also recommended individuals at sea return to shore and carefully regulate offshore and onshore activity.

“In light of the foregoing, the state governments are advised to keep a close watch, monitor the situation in their areas regularly and take appropriate precautionary measures. District authorities are advised accordingly”, the IMD added.
