IAF Confirms Death Of Two Pilots In Su-30MKI Crash

The Indian Air Force (IAF) confirmed the death of two pilots after a Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter aircraft crashed during a routine training mission in Assam.

Squadron Leader Anuj and Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Duragkar sustained fatal injuries in the accident.

The IAF expressed deep condolences to their families and paid tribute to their service to the nation.

In a message posted on the social media platform X, the Air Force stated that all personnel stand firmly with the bereaved families during this difficult time.

The Sukhoi Su-30MKI aircraft crashed in the Karbi Anglong district of Assam, around 60 kilometres from Jorhat.

Defence officials said the aircraft was conducting a routine sortie when it suddenly lost radar contact.

The disappearance immediately alerted the Air Force, prompting a swift response to locate the aircraft and determine the situation.

Search and rescue teams from the Indian Air Force quickly launched operations in the region.

Personnel from the local administration and other security agencies also joined the effort to locate the crash site and gather information about the incident.

Authorities began combing the surrounding areas of Karbi Anglong to verify the circumstances that led to the crash.

Officials said investigators would examine technical factors and operational conditions to determine the cause of the accident.

The Sukhoi Su-30MKI is one of the Indian Air Force’s most advanced frontline fighter aircraft and plays a vital role in India’s air defence capability.

Designed as a multi-role combat jet, the aircraft can carry out both air-to-air combat and ground-attack missions.

Incidents involving Su-30MKI aircraft have occurred in the past as well. In August 2019, a similar aircraft crashed near Tezpur in Assam during a training mission, though both pilots ejected safely.

Another Su-30MKI crashed near Tezpur in May 2015 shortly after take-off, with the pilots surviving after ejecting. The Indian Air Force is expected to conduct a detailed investigation into the latest crash.
