HM Amit Shah Pays Tribute To 150 Years Of ‘Vande Mataram’

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday described Vande Mataram as not just a song but ‘the voice of India’s soul’, as the nation celebrated 150 years of the timeless composition.

The Home Minister’s message came as part of a series of nationwide events commemorating the song’s enduring legacy and influence.

In a heartfelt post on X, Shah reflected on the song’s deep emotional and historical resonance. “

Vande Mataram is not merely a collection of words; it is the voice of India’s soul. During the British regime, it united the nation and awakened the spirit of freedom, dedication, and sacrifice among revolutionaries,” he wrote in Hindi.

Symbol of Unity and Patriotism

Amit Shah emphasised that Vande Mataram continues to inspire Indians even 150 years after it was penned by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in 1875.

The song, first published in the literary journal Bangadarshan and later included in the novel Anandamath, became a rallying cry for the independence movement.

“Even today, Vande Mataram ignites the eternal flame of nationalism in every Indian heart,” Shah stated, adding that it remains a symbol of unity, patriotism, and collective pride. He described it as a spiritual and cultural anthem that embodies India’s eternal values and the strength of its civilisation.

Encouraging citizens to join the celebrations, Shah urged families across the country to sing the complete version of Vande Mataram together.

“Let us, on this historic occasion, sing Vande Mataram with our families so that its spirit continues to inspire future generations,” he said.

The Home Minister’s message sought to remind people of the song’s significance not only as a piece of literature but as a living symbol of the Indian spirit — one that binds the nation beyond language, region, and culture.

Nationwide Celebrations Underway

Meanwhile, several events are being organised across the country to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram.

The Delhi Legislative Assembly hosted a special event celebrating its historical importance, featuring cultural performances and the illumination of the Assembly building in the colours of the national flag.

Later in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend a major event in New Delhi to launch the year-long commemoration of Vande Mataram.

The programme includes the release of a commemorative stamp and coin, symbolising the enduring pride and unity inspired by this national treasure.

As Vande Mataram completes 150 years, it continues to hold a sacred place in India’s national consciousness.

From inspiring revolutionaries during the freedom movement to kindling patriotism among modern generations, the song remains a beacon of India’s identity — a living reminder that the voice of the nation still echoes in its timeless refrain: ‘Vande Mataram’.
