HM Amit Shah Names Suvendu Adhikari Bengal’s First BJP CM; Oath-Taking Tomorrow In Kolkata

In a dramatic political breakthrough, Suvendu Adhikari on Friday officially emerged as the first Bharatiya Janata Party Chief Minister of West Bengal after the party elected him leader of its legislature unit.

The announcement followed a crucial meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Kolkata.

The development came after the BJP secured a commanding victory in the 2026 Assembly elections, winning 207 seats and ending the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee.

The Trinamool Congress remained limited to 80 seats in one of Bengal’s most decisive electoral verdicts since Independence.

The oath-taking ceremony for the newly elected BJP government will take place on May 9 at Brigade Parade Ground. The event coincides with Rabindra Jayanti, commemorating Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony.

Earlier, Home Minister Amit Shah held consultations with newly elected BJP legislators ahead of the party’s formal announcement of Suvendu Adhikari’s elevation to the state’s highest office.

Political observers described the moment as a landmark shift in Bengal’s political history.

Governor RN Ravi dissolved the Legislative Assembly on Thursday, clearing the constitutional path for government formation.

Mamata Banerjee refused to resign and stated, “Let them dismiss me. I want this to be a black day.”

The political atmosphere across Bengal remains highly charged amid post-election tensions, leadership changes, and intense public attention surrounding the state’s transition of power.
