HM Amit Shah Flags Punjab’s Drug Crisis; Questions Mann Government Over Law & Order

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday raised concerns over rising drug trafficking, gangsterism and organised crime in Punjab, questioning Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s government over public safety.

In a Hindi post on X, Shah cited incidents in Dirba and Mansa, demanding accountability and stronger action against criminal networks.

He said a father allegedly consumed poison under pressure in Dirba, while anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhotta was shot dead in broad daylight in Mansa.

Shah said Jhotta’s father had levelled serious allegations against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government and its MLA. He added that the Union Home Ministry would seek responses from the Punjab government regarding both incidents.

Shah alleged that drug trafficking continued to flourish and organised crime posed a growing threat. He urged Mann to deliver tangible results instead of publicity and announcements, demanding decisive action against drug networks and an impartial investigation into alleged political patronage extended to criminals.

The Home Minister reiterated his pledge to make Punjab drug-free, gangster-free and secure if the BJP formed the government in the state.

Meanwhile, Punjab Police suspended City-2 Police Station SHO Beant Kaur and arrested Neelam Rani, wife of the alleged shooter, on Thursday, two days after Jhotta’s murder.

Police secured seven days of remand for alleged shooter Ashwani Kumar and his associate Vipin Kumar. Officers also arrested another associate, Laadi, in connection with the case.

Mansa Senior Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Choudhary said Ashwani switched off his mobile phone after the alleged shooting and fled with help from Laadi and Vipin. Police later arrested him in Salasar, Rajasthan.

The investigation continues as the killing fuels political debate over drug trafficking and law enforcement in Punjab.
