Union Home Minister Amit Shah extended heartfelt wishes to the people of Assam on the occasion of Asom Divas, observed annually on 2 December. The day celebrates the arrival of Chaolung Sukapha, the founder of the Ahom kingdom and a key figure in shaping Assam’s historic and cultural identity.
Shah emphasised that the last nine years under the Modi-led NDA government have brought peace, stability, and rapid development to the state.
Taking to the social media platform X, Shah wrote: “Warm wishes to our sisters and brothers of Assam on #AsomDivas. This occasion commemorates the glory of the Ahom era and fortifies our commitment to protecting the rich culture of Assam, in which every Indian takes great pride.”
He added that the NDA government has ‘ushered in an era of peace, turning Assam into a hub of development and education’, and reaffirmed the Centre’s resolve to continue supporting the state’s progress.
Shah expressed hope that the day would deepen cultural bonds and strengthen national unity.
Asom Divas, also known as Sukapha Divas, marks the arrival of Chaolung Sukapha in 1228.
A prince from the Tai kingdom of Mong Mao near present-day Yunnan in China, Sukapha migrated after being denied his right to the throne.
His 13-year journey through the Patkai mountains ended in Namrup in southeast Assam, where he established the powerful Ahom kingdom.
Sukapha’s rule, which expanded across six centuries, laid the foundation of ‘Bor Asom’ or greater Assam.
His inclusive approach towards the region’s diverse tribal communities earned him widespread respect, helping build a unified kingdom that resisted major external forces, including the Mughal Empire.
His leadership continues to be regarded as a cornerstone of Assam’s cultural identity.
Asom Divas is a regional public holiday and remains a significant reminder of the state’s rich heritage. Assam, home to over 30 million people, observes the day with pride and enthusiasm.
Celebrations begin with traditional music and indigenous performances such as Bagurumba, Bihu, and Bhortal.
Cultural programmes, award ceremonies, and state-wide processions pay tribute to Sukapha’s contributions and highlight Assam’s unity in diversity.
The day stands as both a cultural celebration and a reaffirmation of Assam’s historic legacy—honoured by its people and acknowledged at the national level.
