HM Amit Shah Assures Mizoram Of Rs 10 Crore Rice Aid For Refugees

The Central government has assured Mizoram of Rs 10 crore in rice assistance to support thousands of refugees currently residing in the state.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah conveyed the assurance during a meeting with Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma in New Delhi on Friday.

According to officials, CM Lalduhoma informed the Home Minister that nearly 40,000 refugees from Myanmar, Bangladesh and Manipur are presently taking shelter across Mizoram.

In response, Shah assured support through the supply of rice valued at Rs 10 crore for relief and welfare measures.

The Chief Minister met the Union Home Minister at Kartavya Bhawan and discussed several matters linked to the state’s development and public welfare.

CM Lalduhoma said Mizoram has not received SRE assistance as the state has remained largely free of insurgency. He requested assistance under the scheme to strengthen efforts against drug trafficking, cross-border crimes and emerging cyber threats.

Shah advised the state government to submit additional proposals under the PM-DeVINE scheme and assured support for development initiatives across the state.

The Chief Minister also outlined the humanitarian burden arising from the large refugee influx.

CM Lalduhoma stated that the state government continues to provide shelter, food, healthcare and other assistance despite limited resources. He sought greater Central support to sustain these efforts while pursuing developmental goals.

More than 30,000 Myanmar nationals have entered Mizoram since the 2021 military coup. Around 2,365 refugees from Bangladesh have also taken shelter in the state.

Additionally, several thousand displaced Kuki-Zo, Hmar, and other tribal community members from Manipur continue to reside in Mizoram following ethnic violence that began in May 2023.

Officials said Mizoram has continued extending humanitarian support on compassionate grounds despite resource constraints.
