At least seven people died and 11 sustained injuries after a private passenger bus plunged into a 100-foot-deep gorge in Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district on Saturday, police said.
The accident occurred on the Tissa-Bairagarh route when the bus reportedly skidded off the road near the Chaluj turn.
The driver and conductor were among those who died, while authorities admitted the injured to a hospital in Tissa.
Most passengers were local residents travelling towards Chamba town.
Preliminary information indicated that approximately 20 to 25 people were aboard the vehicle at the time of the accident.
The Sharma Travellers bus left Bairagarh for Chamba at around 06:30 AM. It had travelled nearly three kilometres when the driver reportedly lost control while negotiating a turn, causing the vehicle to roll down the hillside.
The bus eventually landed on a road below the accident site.
Eyewitnesses told police that the vehicle went off the road after the driver lost control at the bend.
Local residents began rescue efforts before police and administrative teams arrived.
Emergency teams faced difficulty rescuing victims from the damaged bus.
Police are investigating the cause, while Chamba’s narrow mountain roads remain a major safety concern.
The location of Saturday’s accident has witnessed several road incidents in recent years and has gained a reputation as an accident-prone stretch.
Authorities are expected to examine the vehicle’s condition, the driver’s actions and road safety conditions as part of their investigation into the fatal crash.
