High Court: Former SP MLA Has Appealed Against 7-Year Sentence, Hearing On August 8

Prayagraj: The Allahabad High Court heard the appeal of former SP MLA Irfan Solanki, on Thursday. The High Court has sought a reply from the UP government within two weeks. The next hearing in the case will be on August 8.

Irfan Solanki has filed an appeal in Allahabad High Court against the 7-year sentence he received in the case of burning a woman’s house. He has also demanded a stay on the sentence till the final verdict and release on bail. A single bench of Justice Rajiv Mishra heard the case in Allahabad High Court.

The MP-MLA court has sentenced the outgoing SP MLA from the Sisamau assembly constituency of Kanpur, Irfan Solanki, and his brother Rizwan Solanki to 7 years of imprisonment. They had filed an appeal in the Allahabad High Court to cancel the sentence. Irfan Solanki is currently lodged in Maharajganj jail.

Irfan Solanki lost his assembly membership. According to Irfan Solanki’s advocate Upendra Upadhyay, MLA Irfan Solanki has lost his assembly membership due to the sentence. If he gets relief from the stay on the sentence, then he can regain his MLA membership. On 7 June 2024, the Special MP MLA Court of Kanpur sentenced five people including SP MLA Irfan Solanki to 7 years imprisonment and fine.

This sentence was pronounced after declaring him guilty in the case of burning down the house of a woman named Nazir Fatima in the Defence Colony of Jajmau. Solanki was elected MLA from the Sisamau seat on the Samajwadi Party ticket. After the sentence, he lost his MLA post. Irfan Solanki is currently lodged in Maharajganj jail.

Samajwadi Party MLA Irfan Solanki and his brothers Rizwan Solanki, Shaukat Pehelwan, Israel Aate Wala, and Mohammad Sharif were sentenced to 7 years imprisonment and fined Rs 30,500 by the MPML court. A woman named Nazir Fatima had lodged a case of arson with the intention of occupying the house at Jajmau police station on 8 November 2022.
