Hezbollah Vows Retaliation Against Israel After Exploding Pagers Kill At least 9, Leave 3,000 Injured

Hezbollah has vowed to retaliate against Israel after a series of explosions targeted pagers used by its members across Lebanon. The blasts killed at least nine people and injured nearly 3,000, marking a dramatic escalation amid heightened tensions in the region. Lebanese Health Minister Firass Abiad confirmed that a 10-year-old girl was among the deceased, with over 200 injuries categorized as critical.

The explosions occurred just hours after Israel announced it was broadening its military objectives to include actions against Hezbollah, following the Hamas attacks that began on October 7. This apparent sabotage attack follows months of targeted assassinations by Israel against Hezbollah leaders. US officials are now concerned that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu might order a ground invasion of Lebanon.

Hospitals Overwhelmed Amid Rising Tensions

The blasts exploited low-tech pagers that Hezbollah uses to avoid tracking via mobile phone signals. Reports indicate that Iran’s ambassador to Beirut, Mojtaba Amani, was among the injured. Lebanon’s Information Minister Ziad Makary called the explosions an act of “Israeli aggression.”

Hezbollah stated that two of its fighters were among the dead and threatened “just punishment” for Israel. Injuries reported include severe wounds to the face, hands, and stomach. Hospitals across Lebanon are overwhelmed with casualties, prompting the Health Ministry to declare a state of maximum alert. Videos circulating on social media show graphic injuries among victims, including children.

In response to the blasts, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and military leaders held emergency consultations to assess readiness for potential escalation. The Israeli military stated there was no change in civilian instructions but acknowledged the possibility of further conflict. Meanwhile, Hezbollah believes the attacks respond to an alleged assassination attempt on an Israeli official, though the group has not commented on this claim.

The violence has already displaced tens of thousands from their homes, as hospitals struggle to treat the influx of patients. The situation remains tense, with both sides bracing for further escalations in this volatile region.
